The first 3 years of his career were spent practicing in Red Mesa, Arizona, working for Indian Health Services. He then began working for Utah Navajo Health System, in Montezuma Creek, Utah, and eventually for the UNHS Blanding Family Practice, in Blanding, Utah.

Following high school, before he began his college studies, Dr. Nielson spent two years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Ecuador, Guayaquil Mission. He married his wife, Andrea, while attending Brigham Young University and they started their family, during medical school.

“We feel blessed we can raise our four children in Blanding,” Dr. Nielson explained. “I am happy to be living in San Juan County. I have always loved this area. I also appreciate the outdoors. I love to spend time on Elk Ridge, in the Bears Ears area, where I grew up ranching."
