Orthopedic Surgeon joins Blue Mountain Hospital team - Medically Speaking, Volume Three, Number Nine, 3/17/16

Dr. John LeBlanc DO, an Orthopedic Surgeon, who has practiced in Arcata, California for more than a decade, has agreed to become the newest member of the Blue Mountain Hospital surgical team.

Dr. LeBlanc was born in Bakersfield, California but spent most of his youth growing up in Houston, Texas. After graduating from high school, LeBlanc attended Houston Baptist University, where he earned degrees in Biology and French, while playing NCAA Division I Collegiate Soccer for four years. LeBlanc is proud of the fact that during the 1988 soccer season, his Houston Baptist team was ranked 8th in the nation.

After earning his undergraduate degrees, LeBlanc took a year off and pursued his dream of playing professional soccer with the Southwest Indoor Soccer League. The Doctor says he still has 'some skills', and he's been keeping in shape by working out with the Adams State Soccer team in Alamosa, Colorado, while waiting to join the BMH surgical team.

He didn't completely abandon his medical aspirations, even while playing professional soccer. According to LeBlanc, he played soccer from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at night, then drove an hour to his home and worked during the day doing research.

With his professional soccer career behind him, LeBlanc later attended medical school at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Iowa, and graduated in 1995. He completed his internship at Garden City Hospital, in Michigan, in 1996 and completed his residency at North-Shore LIJ Hospital, in New York, in 2001. He left New York three months before the attack on 9/11, and accepted a 1-year combined sports fellowship at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington. After a year practicing in Colorado, Dr. LeBlanc began practicing in Arcata, California, where he opened his own practice, North Coast Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

While in Arcata, Dr. LeBlanc earned the moniker of 'The Shoulder Guy', a name he first heard at the Safeway store and given to him because he performed surgery on a lot of shoulder injuries. He also performs surgery on knees, ankles and elbows and performs Arthroscopy. He recently closed his practice in Arcata. He and his wife Shannon relocated, temporarily, to Alamosa, before deciding to accept a position with Blue Mountain Hospital. He will begin seeing patients later this month, and said the idea of moving to a small town, where there are more mountains than people, is something he and Shannon are looking forward to.

According to LeBlanc, Blanding is an ideal place because it is close to ski areas, where he and his wife can snowboard. His wife's father is a Senior X-Games Snowboarder so snowboarding is in the blood. The Doctor and his wife love doing things together. They want to raise and ride horses and they enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and camping. Dr. LeBlanc also enjoys playing golf and he said he'd like to work with high school sports programs and maybe with the youth soccer program at some point.

"The outflow of kindness from everyone at Blue Mountain Hospital has been overwhelming," the Doctor said last week. "Summer (Wojcik) and Dr. James Bonds have been great. I think there are reasons to be in certain places. Everyone has been so kind and everything has just opened up."

Dr. LeBlanc and his wife have three grown sons, two cats and a dog. The Doctor also speaks French. We are thrilled to have him as a member of our surgical team. We want to welcome Dr. LeBlanc and Shannon to our family.
