Swing Bed Services

At Blue Mountain Hospital Swing Beds are used for patients who require support, but not full Inpatient support, and qualify to receive Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy, while in the hospital. Swing Services are similar to those found in Skilled Nursing Facilities, such as Nursing Homes, but Swing Bed admissions are for shorter-term admissions. Blue Mountain Hospital provides Swing Bed care for patients who don’t necessarily want to go to a nursing home, or need to go to a nursing home. Instead, they can come here for a period of time and get rehabilitation.

Swing Bed patients might stay for two days or as long as 90 days. Swing Bed patients have more freedom. Their family can check them out and take them to activities, but they return to the hospital to receive therapy. While receiving Swing Bed care, all medications are generally taken orally. Normally, IV’s are not used. Generally, Swing Bed patients are out of the acute phase of medical treatment. Their care has stabilized to the point where they do not need medical care, but their physical recovery is not fully stabilized, so Swing Beds are utilized for getting that physical recovery.

Swing Bed patients at Blue Mountain Hospital receive therapy from Precision Rehabilitation. Precision’s Physical and Occupational Therapists visit the rooms to help swing bed patients with their therapy.

Blue Mountain Hospital can receive Swing Bed patients from other hospitals. We receive Swing Bed patients from the University of Utah, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado, and other facilities if beds are available. Local residents, who are Swing Bed patients at another hospital, can request to be sent to Blue Mountain Hospital and receive Swing Bed treatment at home for recovery.
