San Juan County residents needing Orthopedic Surgery will soon be able to have their surgery done at Blue Mountain Hospital, in Blanding.
Dr. Kipley Siggard, MD, of Salt Lake City, told Medically Speaking he will be available to perform Orthopedic Surgery at Blue Mountain Hospital twice each month, starting in September. Dr. Siggard explained, during a recent interview, that he will be in Blanding every other Monday and Tuesday to consult with patients in the clinic setting, and to perform procedures as needed. He also indicated that the intent is to increase his presence at BMH as needed, which would likely lead to him being there every week instead of every other.
Dr. Siggard graduated from the University of Utah Medical School in 1984, did his Internship at UC Irvine in 1985 and completed his residency at the University of Utah in 1989. After twenty years in private practice in Salt Lake City, Dr. Siggard explained that his partner retired and he elected to take a position with Wind River Bone Joint & Neurology, in Riverton, Wyoming.
"It was an interesting phase of life," he said. "My kids were adults, my partner was leaving and so I moved from urban Salt Lake City to Riverton with a population of 11,000. But it had a Wal-Mart so that put it on the map."
Dr. Siggard finished his five years in Riverton and returned to Salt Lake City in August of 2014. When he learned about Blue Mountain Hospital he had already been contracted to a three-month placement in the Seattle, Washington area for this summer. He will return to Salt Lake City in late August and begin serving patients at Blue Mountain Hospital in September.
Dr. Siggard came to Blanding to meet with BMH administrators and to meet the surgical crew in April and although he'd been to Blanding as a youth, he'd forgotten what the area was like.
"It's a cute little town, but a very unusual place," he said. "I didn't envision the huge juniper forested area. I thought it would be like Moab, but it is very different."
Dr. Siggard describes himself, and his wife, Katherine, as passionate hikers, who love the outdoors. He is equally passionate about fly-fishing, but said he might have to try his hand at fishing on Lake Powell when he gets the chance.
Blue Mountain Hospital is excited to have an Orthopedic Surgeon of Dr. Siggard's caliber onboard, and we look forward to having him with us in September. Blanding may not have a Wal-Mart to put us on the map, but with the attention and accolades the hospital has already received, and with the additional services of providers like Dr. Siggard, Blue Mountain Hospital is helping put Blanding on the map.
