Blue Mountain Hospital has achieved another milestone with RHE announcement that BMH is the first Utah hospital to achieve the prestigious Caregiver Safety Accreditation Award.
This coveted recognition is based on the implementation of a workplace safety training and accountability system. Accreditation is certified by the Caregiver Safety Society, which annually audits its member hospitals for compliance with its stringent safety standards.
Top management at Blue Mountain Hospital has created a caring environment that places high value on protecting employees' long-term physical capabilities. Through rigorous hiring procedures, fitting the employees to the job expectations, and careful training and testing, employee safety and well-being have markedly increased.
Caregiver Safety Accreditation focuses on patient transfers and patient lifting, which are the leading causes of hospital employee injury nationwide. Training in safe lifting techniques is a proactive step toward preventing these injuries. All nurses must demonstrate hands-on patient lifting proficiency through training and testing done at the time of hiring and at annually repeated retraining.
"This was no easy feat," explained National Safety Society representative Chris Miller. "This commitment to a culture of employee safety will serve the hospital well in protecting employees and patients."
National safety studies indicate that hospitals that provide safe working environments also provide safer patient environments. Caregiver Safety Accreditation, while focused on hospital employee safety, naturally enhances patient safety.
"We're proud of our entire staff for helping with this project," said Blue Mountain Hospital Director of Clinical Services Kent Turek. "A year and a half ago we had a risk management assessment done for the hospital and found some areas where we could improve. Over the past year, everyone has worked hard to make those improvements and achieve this level of health care safety. It was definitely a team effort. Some of our employees weren't even aware they were helping, but everyone was involved."
In the event that an employee is injured on the job, Blue Mountain Hospital provides the best medical attention and helps the employee return to full active employment as soon as possible. Claims are managed with the utmost concern for the employee's long-term well-being.
